What percentage of the world's population uses a smartphone?

Around 86 percent of all people worldwide use a smartphone. That works out to about 6.9 billion out of 8 billion. In rich countries the rate is close to 100 percent. In 2007, when the iPhone launched, almost nobody had a smartphone. Today more people own a phone than have access to clean toilets.
