How many characters does a standard Twitter post allow?

280

Background

A tweet on X, formerly Twitter, can be 280 characters long. Until 2017 the limit was just 140 characters, half as many. The limit originally came from SMS, which also allowed 140 characters. Premium users can now even write up to 25,000 characters. The short format became the platform's trademark.
