Which major city was once built entirely on wooden piles?

Venice

Background

Venice has stood on millions of wooden piles for over 1,500 years. The piles were driven deep into the mud of the lagoon. Underwater without oxygen the wood does not rot, it even turns as hard as stone. Under the church of Santa Maria della Salute alone there are over a million piles.
