Background

Mayor Hans Steininger from Braunau in Austria had an extremely long beard of 1.4 meters. Usually he kept it rolled up. During a fire in 1567 he panicked, stepped on his own beard, tripped and broke his neck. His beard can still be seen in a museum today.
