Which explorer ate his own shoes during his expedition?

Roald Amundsen and other polar explorers

Background

Several famous polar explorers had to boil and eat their leather shoes in true emergencies. The men of Ernest Shackleton also chewed on boots and straps. The leather was boiled for hours to make it soft. It tasted awful, but it saved lives. Hunger makes you creative.
