History
Which drink was often safer than water in medieval Europe?
Beer (small beer)
Background
In the Middle Ages water was often dirty and full of bacteria. Beer was boiled and therefore cleaner. Even children and monks drank a light version every day, called small beer. It had little alcohol and simply quenched thirst. Each person drank around 5 liters of beer a day.
