Background

Constantinople fell to the Ottomans in the year 1453. Sultan Mehmed II conquered the city after a long siege. This ended the Eastern Roman Empire after more than 1,000 years. Constantinople became the capital of the Ottoman Empire. Today the city is called Istanbul.
