How many U.S. states were there when Abraham Lincoln became president?

34 states

Background

When Abraham Lincoln took office on March 4, 1861, the United States had 34 states. Kansas had joined just weeks earlier, on January 29, 1861. By that time, seven Southern states had already declared secession. Lincoln did not recognize this as legal. During his presidency, West Virginia (1863) and Nevada (1864) also joined the Union.
