Background
Columbus started with three ships: Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria. On Christmas 1492 the Santa Maria hit a reef off Haiti and sank. The crew used its wood to build a small fort. Columbus returned to Spain with only two ships. The Santa Maria has never been found to this day.
