Background
Fourteen countries took part in the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. Around 240 athletes competed, all of them men. Today over 200 countries and thousands of athletes join the Games. The idea came from Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin. He wanted to revive the old Greek tradition.
