Who told the story of Romeo and Juliet before Shakespeare?

Italian authors

Background

The story of Romeo and Juliet is much older than Shakespeare. Italian writers like Masuccio Salernitano told it already in the 15th century. Shakespeare took the plot from an English poem by Arthur Brooke. His version became famous around 1595. The balcony Juliet speaks from is actually not in the text.
