Before the Coca-Cola ads Santa often wore green, brown, or blue coats. The red Coca-Cola coat was made popular in 1931 by illustrator Haddon Sundblom. Red existed before that in some pictures. The Coca-Cola ad shaped today's worldwide image. In some countries Saint Nicholas still wears green.
