The world's first novel is called The Tale of Genji. It was written around the year 1000 by the court lady Murasaki Shikibu. The book is more than 1000 pages long. It was written at the Japanese imperial court in Kyoto. At that time almost no one in Europe could read, and the printing press had not been invented yet.
