How much of his ear did Vincent van Gogh actually cut off?

His entire left ear

Background

For a long time people thought Van Gogh only cut off part of his earlobe. A note from his doctor shows it was the entire left ear. This happened in 1888 after a fight with Paul Gauguin. Van Gogh took the ear to a brothel and gave it to a woman. A few weeks later he painted his famous self portrait with bandage.
