Background

The Statue of Liberty was built over nine years (1875 to 1884). French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi led the project. The inner frame was designed by Gustave Eiffel, who also built the Eiffel Tower. As a gift from France, the statue arrived in New York in 1885.
