Background

Tolkien needed 12 years and about 9,000 handwritten pages for his work. He often wrote at night after his job as a professor in Oxford. Many scenes he rewrote ten or twenty times. His son Christopher later drew the maps for the book. The manuscript is now kept at Marquette University in the USA.
