Four

Background

Four bronze horses decorate the facade of St. Mark's Basilica in Venice. The Venetians stole them from Constantinople in 1204. Napoleon stole them in 1797 and took them to Paris. Only in 1815 did the horses return to Venice. The originals now stand protected inside, and copies hang outside.
