How fast does the Earth spin? If you are sitting still on your couch right now, the honest answer is: you are flying. At the equator you spin at about 1,674 km/h (1,040 mph). That is faster than the speed of sound and nearly twice as fast as a passenger jet. Your coffee still does not spill. And it gets better: your speed depends entirely on where you stand. How fast does the Earth spin at the equator?

The Earth spins at roughly 1,674 km/h (1,040 mph) at the equator. The math is simple: the equator is about 40,075 km around, and the planet needs just under 24 hours for one full turn. For context: sound travels at 1,235 km/h (767 mph) at sea level. You are moving faster than your own echo.

A commercial airliner cruises at about 900 km/h (560 mph). The ground under your feet turns almost twice that fast. A Formula 1 car at full throttle would look parked next to it.

Rocket engineers cash in on that spin. Launch eastward from the equator and you get about 465 meters per second for free, which means less fuel. That is why Cape Canaveral sits in Florida instead of Alaska, and why Europe launches from Kourou in French Guiana, barely five degrees off the equator.

Why you stand almost still at the North Pole

The 1,674 km/h only applies at the equator. The farther north or south you go, the smaller the circle you travel in one day. The ground turns once every 24 hours everywhere. But at the equator that is 40,075 km, and at the pole it is zero.

Here is what that looks like in real cities. Miami, at roughly 26 degrees north, moves at about 1,508 km/h (937 mph). New York, at nearly 41 degrees, drops to about 1,270 km/h (789 mph). Anchorage, at 61 degrees, is down to about 806 km/h (501 mph). And exactly at the North Pole? You turn around once in 24 hours. That is the whole trip.

Why can't you feel 1,674 km/h?

Because your body does not sense speed. It only senses changes in speed. On a smooth flight at 900 km/h you can pour a coffee without spilling a drop. You only notice takeoff or turbulence. The Earth has been spinning at nearly the same rate for billions of years. No gas pedal, no brakes.

Then there is the air. The atmosphere spins along with the planet. There is no speed difference between you and the air around you, so there is no wind in your face. If the air stopped while the Earth kept turning, the equator would face permanent storms of over 1,600 km/h.

A day is not actually 24 hours long

One full turn on its own axis takes the Earth 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds. That is called a sidereal day. The missing four minutes come down to the Sun.

While the Earth spins, it also travels around the Sun. After one full turn, your town is not pointing straight at the Sun again. The planet has to rotate a little bit extra. Only then is noon back to being noon. Those four minutes are the difference between a sidereal day and a solar day.

The Earth is slowing down, but right now it is speeding up

Over the long run the Moon puts the brakes on. Tides drag against the Earth's crust and that costs energy. The day gets about 1.8 milliseconds longer per century. At the same time the Moon drifts away from us by roughly 3.8 centimeters a year.

That sounds like nothing, but it adds up. A study in the journal PNAS found that 1.4 billion years ago a day lasted only about 18.7 hours. Back then the Moon sat around 341,000 km away. Today the average distance is 384,400 km.

Plot twist: since 2020 the Earth has been spinning faster again. The shortest day ever measured was July 5, 2024, about 1.66 milliseconds short of 24 hours. Nobody is quite sure why. If the trend holds, timekeepers may have to delete a leap second instead of adding one.

You are moving way faster than you think

The spin is the slow part. The Earth races around the Sun at about 107,000 km/h (66,600 mph), which works out to roughly 30 kilometers every second. In the time it took you to read this sentence, you moved a few hundred kilometers.

And the whole solar system orbits the center of the Milky Way at around 828,000 km/h (515,000 mph). One lap takes about 230 million years. The last time we were at this exact spot, the very first dinosaurs were learning to walk.
